The fried egg incident

I wake up in the middle of the night desperate for a drink (every single time after eating Pizza Hut) as I wake up, I realise Ashleigh is still awake and she can’t sleep (think Auschwitz got to her more than I thought) In the morning, we decided to have a 'mini lay in' as are mentally drained after yesterday and need a bit of a rest, so we head down for breakfast around 9am. The breakfast again has all sorts of different options and I’m not sure if this is a polish thing, but the guy sitting next to us had rice on his plate... who on earth eats rice for breakfast? Also being vegetarian I have limited options for a fried breakfast so I go for the fried eggs... you should have seen my sad little face when I opened the lid and they are all gone. 10 minutes later, I noticed they had been refilled... I rush over and again all gone. Super annoyed I sat back down and saw the rice guy had 3 fried eggs on his plate. Was the rice not filling enough for you buddy? I left the breakfast room, eggless.

She broke her wrist

We are exploring the city today and after waiting around 10 minutes for the lift in the hotel to get to us, we head out and walk along the river Wisla. This first part of the walk along the river, we saw sun bed benches, a weird pig statue in the river, some cool statues on the Bernatka bridge and just generally took in the awesome views.

I spent a long time trying to film myself catching leaves fall from a tree (which sounds as tedious as it was) Then we head up to Wawel Royal Castle, which was honestly breathtaking. It looked like something out of a fairy tale. The gardens and architecture were simply stunning! We spent a long time walking around the outside walls admiring the views all around before eating some snacks and walking into the main square.

We decided to try a Obwarzanek (traditional Polish bagel pretzel thing) as there are street stands selling these all over the city and they are super cheap!

Next we wait in the Square to watch and hear the trumpets that play from St Mary’s Basilica every hour (on the hour) the bells chime, a little window opens and a trumpet sticks out playing a song. We then roam around the streets of Kraków before heading to the gardens that surround the main square. We then find a little small square where we sit on a bench in the warm sunshine before heading back to the main square where we sit and watch the world go past while people watching. I’m not really paying attention just watching people walking past and Ashleigh says suddenly “oh no! what have you done” and in the distance we see the older couple from the Auschwitz tour walking towards us, the lady has her lower arm in a cast and is being supported in a sling. They tell us how she fell in the apartment while trying to open a window and ended up with a broken wrist, the husband was more worried that he would have to do the house work when they get home!

Creepy trench coat girl

We say goodbye and walk along a few streets looking for Polish dumplings. We stumble across this perfect little tradition Polish restaurant called ‘Pierogarnia Krakowiacy’ it had lovely painted pastel walls, lots of traditional decoration and was surprisingly spacious inside. I tried 10 spinach/rice/feta dumplings and they were delicious, these were super cheap and could definitely be shared, I couldn’t even finish all mine as they are very filling!

We then wander down more of the interlinking streets around the square before finding the next snack stop... icecream. While we are sitting eating icecream I notice a girl sitting on a bench by us who is in a long trench coat, she was 100% sitting in the last place we stopped too! I joke that she’s an undercover agent following us and we go to leave she stands up and follows behind. A funny joke turns into OMG were going to be murdered by this creepy trench coat girl. I tell ash to stop so I can pretend to tie my shoe and to let her walk past, she goes past us and then 10 seconds later stops and ‘takes off her coat’ while her back is turned we run down another road. This was all probably just a coincidence but I’m chucking it out there... I saved Ashleigh’s life that day (as I keep reminding her) we then joke that everything we do, she will be there! If we go to an icecream shop and she’s the server, she’s gonna be our waitress at dinner, boarding our plane tomorrow... she’s the stewardess.... SHES EVERYWHERE!

The perfect way to end our last evening

After saving Ashleigh’s life, we find a nice little bar inside Sukiennice (which is a renaissance style market, the inside a bit like a bazaar, but also has bars and restaurants on the outside) to put into perspective how cheap it is here... we are sitting in the main square of Krakow with an amazing view, we have 2 cocktails, glass of wine and an icecream and it’s the equivalent of about £14 altogether) I loved just sitting here watching the world go past in the warm sunshine, overlooking the square, drink in hand and the sun beginning to set.

When we paid the shockingly low bill, we headed back to walk along the river via a short walk through Wawel Castle (which was even better in golden hour) we also noticed a dragon statue that every few minutes roared fire in front of the castle which was pretty cool. It also made a lot more sense as to why I’ve seen loads of dragon merchandise everywhere!

As we walk back along the river we get one of the most spectacular sunsets, when the sun fully dips... the Krakow sky is turning crazy shades of pink and orange and purple. We stopped for a moment hand in hand and took the view in. We had seen a river boat restaurant on our way in earlier, which is where we are heading for dinner. The plan was if it was closed to go to Pizza Hut (I think ashleigh was secretly hoping it was closed) it wasn’t and we had a lovely meal on the water. The restaurant was called Augusta, we of course had pizza and apart from a pretty long wait for the bill, it was the perfect way to end our last evening in Krakow.

I’ve never seen ash move so quick!

We got back to the hotel ready for one more relaxing visit to the spa, but it was super busy! 3 guys were hogging the hottub (and were insanely loud) all the sunbeds had towels on and the pool is too cold for Ashleigh. I brave the pool and after about 15 minutes Ashleigh looks fed up. In the meantime the 3 loud guys friends had entered and they motion to each other to do a swap for the hot tub. I’ve never seen ash move so quick! As the 3 loud guys exit, she runs infront shouts for me to jump out the pool and we slip in before them! We get some pretty gruelling stares but oh well. We spend 10 minutes and then get out (the remaining friends fill in the hot tub and we go in the sauna, after another 10 minutes we leave get changed and leave the spa, we notice they are still in the hot tub as we leave (they had been in there nearly half hour) it’s worth noting as well that we weren’t the only ones in the spa, lots of other people were clearly waiting to use the hot tub, some people are just so rude. We head to our room and pack our bags before heading to bed after a long day of exploring the city.
